服务器操作系统主要分为四大流派：WINDOWS、LINUX、NETWARE、UNIX。
WINDOWS 服务器操作系统
重要版本WINNT 4.0 Server、Win2000/AdvancedServer、Win2003/AdvancedServer,WINDOWS SERVER 2008,，Windows服务器操作系统派应用，结合.Net开发环境，为亲微软企业用户提供了良好的应用框架。
Linux 服务器操作系统
LINUX操作系统虽然与UNIX操作系统类似，但是它不是UNIX操作系统的变种。Torvald从开始编写内核代码时就仿效UNIX，几乎所有UNIX的工具与外壳都可以运行在LINUX上。
由于Linux内核具有稳定性、开放源代码等特点，另外，使用者不必支付打包的使用费用，所以Linux获得了IBM、戴尔等世界厂商的支持，同时景安DEll服务器也支持Linux操作系统。
NetWare 服务器操作系统
在一些特定行业和事业单位中，NetWare优秀的批处理功能和安全、稳定的系统性能也有很大的生存空间。NetWare目前常用的版本主要有Novell的3.11、3.12、4.10、5.0等中英文版。
Unix 服务器操作系统
Unix服务器操作系统由AT&T公司和SCO公司共同推出，主要支持大型的文件系统服务、数据服务等应用。目前市面上流传的主要有SCOSVR、BSDUnix、SUNSolaris、IBM-AIX、HP-UX 。
企业用的UNIX系统主要有：
小型机/大型机：AIX、HP-UX、Tru64 Unix、IRIX等，其中使用较多的是AIX和HP-UX
服务器/PC：Solaris、OpenServer、Unixware、FreeBSD、OpenBSD等
大型机/小型机的UNIX系统大多需要相应的硬件平台（AIX有x86版本的），服务器/PC中大多有x86版本，可以学习用。
Solaris(x86)、OpenBSD、FreeBSD等都是免费的。
企业使用无非是业务系统、文件服务器、WEB服务器、邮件服务器，能带个阵列、装个数据库、做个双机系统什么的，估计个人*多装个数据库库、做个磁盘RAID玩一下，这个用Linux也一样
Linux是模仿UNIX系统开发的一套操作系统，和UNIX的硬件平台及配置管理工具等都不同（不同的UNIX也不同），linux的文件系统架构、用户管理机制、标准命令行指令等都与UNIX兼容，个人认为可以作为UNIX学习用。目前桌面版linux好评较多的是ubuntu，服务器版的redhat，光盘版的slax。
